There was a day...

We have been working together on design jobs for awhile, always talking about creating something digitally interactive and fun. We realised that digital interactive art are lacking in Malaysia, we feels that this should be introduced to more locals.

There comes a day we saw this competition, it's about using unused household materials to create an artwork. It's like a voice telling us to do something. Thus, we discussed and submitted our proposal for the first phase. Below is the competition information, we get into second phas under New Media category:

Waste to Art Competition 2019

We only have 1 and half month to execute the project, our work can only be exhibit in the final stage if we pass through the second phase.

Why are we doing this?

1. Hope to explore more on the combination of technology and artform.
2. Hope to let more people know that unused household material can have it's own new interpretation. 
3. Hope to let more people know about digital interactive artform.

What we do...

Our interactive artwork is created based on marine pollution.

When we think about discarded material or used material from household, we think about plastics materials. These years, there’s a lot of news regarding plastic waste polluted our marine lives. These plastics were pouring to ocean illegally or due to miss-managed. It affects the marine life, and also other ecosystems. Polluted materials will release toxin, when human consume seafood (especially fish that providing protein to us) that are affected by these will fall sick. Ocean pollutions affected the marine lost their beautiful and clean habitat; they are unable to shout out for a stop on human’s waste.

Based on this issue, we want to create an artwork of a giant fish that will rise up awareness of the ocean pollution itself. Fish is a recognisable marine life to our everyday life, but we tend to forget about what happened to them and how ocean pollution will affect not just their lives but also ours. With the collection of plastic bottles, plastics bags, other household material, unused material from the shore such as fishing net and rope, we will form the fish in parts to ease its movement. The fish is formed by discarded household materials and is wrapped by unused fishing net. This is to represent that the fishes are consuming polluted waste, and the food (fish) we get from the ocean are actually the waste that we threw from our daily life rubbish. It creates a link to think about what we actually throw out will end up return back to us in different form.

The fish will be lying silently on the exhibition space. However, when there’s someone passing by, it will flap as if it’s seeking for help. The marines are silent; they know nothing about what they have eaten. We would like to make this as a wake-up call to everyone to look into the pollution of our household waste.

What we are workin on.

Juggle between work and this project, we can only utilise our every minute of holiday and freetime to collect unused household materials from door to door. We are glad and sincerely appreciate everyone who help us all the way, help to spread message out asking for unused materials, consolidate materials in their house so that we don't need to go really door to door, as well as helping us to get fish nets and ropes.

We join this competition with creating digital interactive artwork mainly because we hope to try out different thing as well as expose people with the combination of digital technology in artform. By working on this, we know that every steps are trial error to us, we hope to get more funding to experiment and complete this project. This fund will be using for: 

1. Studio Rental
2. Digital gadget purchase
3. Set up materials
4. Transportation
